Research and Planning- Analysis of a contemporary openings "Juno"

http://www.shadowplaystudio.com/juno/index.html

The Juno opening sequence has a very d.i.y and this aspect of the title sequence works with the Juno character. The main focus of the opening sequence is Juno the opening is quite simple in the sense that all we are seeing is this girl on a journey however its what we see on her journey that make up the character and that set off the enigmas for the rest of the film.

The way the titles are displayed is essential to the openings because they too set up enigmas for the other characters for example. When we see Juno walking past a music shop we see a animated guitar with "Micheal Cera" written on it, and that makes it clear that the character he plays is into music and could perhaps play the guitar.

The thing that makes this title sequence so exciting is the animatic nature of it. The opening itself seems very independent and original and I think that works very well in context with the nature of the film.

The way Juno has been place in each of the frames is also very interesting, she always seen directly in the middle of each frame this could perhaps show that she is good at remaining centred and calm no matter how hard things get she will remain cool, calm and collected.

Whats The Story?

WHATS THE STORY??
Josh is new in Poppy's school, he came to poppy's school from a prestigious grammar school but had to move because of his dads new job, when first entering the school he expects to find himself as popular at this school as he was at his last however it doesn't turn out the way he planned. Josh becomes a bit of an outcast within the school just because he doesn't fit in with any of the social groups within the school. One day when he is doing research in the schools library he meets Poppy. Poppy tells Josh exactly whats wrong with him and tells him he needs to stop thinking so highly of himself and try to fit in, so with that Josh and Poppy become friends and after a while there friendship develops into more. After a few weeks Poppy's friends start ignoring her and when she confronts them about it they say its because of her new relationship with Josh and because he doesn't "fit in" with the rest of her friends they give her an ultimatum and she chooses Josh.Unknowingly to Poppy,Josh overheard the conversation and stormed out of the room because he didn't like what her friends were saying and he didn't want to be the cause of Poppy loosing her friends. The next day Josh comes into school and has totally altered his appearance in order to impress Poppy's friends but in doing this Poppy breaks up with Josh and tells him she fell for the real him and not the fake him. Weeks pass and Josh slowly turns back into the way he was when he first met Poppy. When Josh is revising in the libary he spots Poppy and introduces himself as if its for the first time and with this Poppy and Josh get back together.

Research And Planning- The Perfect Opening Sequence

What The Opening SHOULD Do Top 5
1.Grab attention
2.Introduce The characters
3.Be different from others
4.Make It Memorable
5.Set a mood
What The Opening SHOULDN'T Do Top 5
1.Be too long
2.Give away the whole story
3.Just the title
4.Shouldn't be unrelated to main film
5.Give The Audience Too Many Characters To Wrap Their Head Around

Introduction To Research And Planning-Production Brief

•Project name: Naive City
•Length: 2 minutes
•Deadline: 22nd feb 2010
•Group members & their roles: Gemma Banham Editor/director,
Aimee Rawlinson Costume Desginer/director,
Molly Baxter Incharge of Recce,
Jason Summerfield Organisation of the shoot
•Brief overview of content: Romantic comedy based on the lives of two people Poppy and Josh, Josh is the new boy in school and he starts at poppy's school and isn't very popular and Poppy tries to bring him down to earth but will things all work out....
•Target audience (age group, gender bias (if any). 12-19 year olds; the reason we have chosen this age group is because films like Angus Thongs And Perfect Snogging appeal to a wide range of teenagers and this is the appeal we want our film to have.
•What comparable products have you researched? Look into opening sequence of teen romantic comedies e.g. Juno,Angus Thongs And Perfect Snogging, A Cinderellas's Story, in order to gain an incite of what these films look like and how they are filmed.
•How will you test whether the product is successful? Audience questionaires
How will you check that it accomplishes the intended effect? Showing it to classes with feedback.
•What generic codes and conventions will be operating in your text? A Split screen and a indie based soundtrack so it flows at a smooth pace, titles will be edited in blue and pink abit like the film Its a Boy Girl Thing.
•What are the overt (obvious) messages incorporated into the text? That teen love can happen at random moments of their life.
•Are there any (hidden) messages incorporated into the text? Inigmas to show each of the characters personalities.

Continuity Piece

This is our Preliminary Excerise this required us to make a continuity sequence before beginning our main piece of Media coursework. As a group we made several attemps at a continity sequence and unfortunatly they all lacked the qualites that the continity sequence's are meant to have. This attempt was by far our best one, we wanted to make our piece origninal and we think we have achieved this with our piece
