Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our opening sequence uses the normal codes and conventions of any rom-com but in some sense we've developed these codes and conventions to make them our own.The main focus of a Romantic Comedy is the boy and the girl characters because it has to be made clear that these are the characters you will be following throughout the film. The title of our film is Naive City and we feel this is a good title for a Romantic Comedy because love can be very naive at that age and we also felt it had a nice ring to it. As a group we decided we wanted the opening to be editied as a split screen, this was the element we were most scared about because we didn't know if it was going to look right we developed this idea to fit our genre because normally split screens are found in Action Films but we really wanted it in our sequence and I think it worked really well.

The mise-en-scene of our film is another way we have developed the codes and conventions because in most Rom-Coms you expect to see sunny weather, large houses and expensive cars but with ours we have made it very urban and the weather is quite grey (much to our annoyance) but we think it works very well and it fits more with our generation.

The actual titles of our opening are the part of it that are regular in Rom-Coms, we decided to make the titles gender specific we decided that the colours would be pink and blue and as a group we thought this worked really well in our opening. The titles appear on the screen and fade off and this was the element we wanted to be like a regular Rom-Com and I think worked really well and made our piece look more like a genuine Romantic Comedy. When it came to the song for our titles we became increasingly worried the reason for this is because we couldn't use the original song due to copy write restrictions so as we started to look around for solutions we decided to record our own version of the song and we think it fits with the regular codes and conventions of any Rom-Com, the song we recorded features a soft guitar riff and I think it creates a happy positive mood to the piece. Overall I think our opening sequence developed the codes and conventions of real media products but it has elements of regular media products.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
The social group our product uses is teenagers, we embedded the teen element of the film by the two main characters getting ready in the morning and by setting up enigmas like photos of friends and guitars in the corner, this element was really important for us to get right because we didn't want anyone to get offended. As a group we feel that people in the age bracket of 15-19 Will relate very well with these two characters whether it be saying they like the outfits or saying they recognise the place we shot in we feel as a group people will relate to the characters.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
After many discussions we decided that Nickelodeon would distribute our film. The reason we have decided on this particular distributor is because they have distributed films like Angus Thongs And Perfect Snogging,Yours Mine And Ours most of Nickelodeon's films are targeted for teenagers we felt this would suite our genre and target audience really well and we think they would do this for our film.

Who would be the audience for your media product?
We decided the audience for our film would be 12-19 year olds, the reason we decided upon this age group is because we felt we wanted teens as well as young adults would want to come and watch our film. We also decided on this age group because we didn't want to create a film that we wouldn't go to watch so we catered it to our own individual taste.

How did you attract/address your audience?
We addressed our audience by taking them on a journey through the two characters daily routine we feel that this will grab the audience's attention because we feel the audience will recognize part of themselves in the two main characters also we've used places where most teenagers go on the weekends e.g. Shopping Center's and taking the bus so we've really used place teenagers will relate too.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
When editing our piece we came across all new editing programmes the main one being Final Cut Pro, because none of us had used this particular editing programme before we were all abit overwhelmed, but as we edited a few scenes together we eventually got used to it. Another programme we used for the first time was music maker, this programme helped us record the song for our titles, this was by far the easiest element to produce because it took us the shortest amount of time and it only required one of us to manage everything. During the editing process I learnt alot about myself and I learnt that you need to take your time especially when using new programmes.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

From the preliminary task I have learnt how important storyboarding and organisation is key in producing a good media product. For the preliminary task it took us a very short amount of time to edit and film and we underestimated how many obstacles we would have to face when completing the larger part of the coursework. We also had to rely on a lot of things on the actual day of shooting for example, the battery not running out on the camera, the group turning up on time and the actors being ready on time. We also had to count on memebers of the public wouldn't run in front of the camera and causing us to re-shoot. We also had to overcome the fullness of the editing sweet because there were some days our mac was in use we had to re-work our plans but we managed to edit our overall product in two weeks and that left us time to file out any rough edges and re-work the song and the title.

Overall I feel we have created a very realistic opening sequence and it does a good job of telling a story.

The FINAL Opening

This is the final cut of our title sequence. As soon as we sorted out the music as a group we instantly knew it was perfect (well in our eyes anyway). Personally I think the music does alot to the titles no matter what genre it is and I think our music fits perfectly.

Audience Feedback

On the 24th of February we screened our opening sequences to the rest of our media class and at home to our family; Through audience feedback we were able to determin what needed changing or what could stay the same in our title sequences.

Here are some of the comments people made about our piece.

Belinda Raji: "Its looking really good guys its just a shame about the music."
Katie Banham: "It reminded me of Its A Boy Girl Thing, it works really well in context with your genre."
Leanne Whittaker: "At the moment the song is whats letting it down, if you re-work the song it will be alot better."
Laura Debourde: "I Love It".
Nancy Compopiano: " It was really good I have nothing bad to say about it the music is really good very catchy just a shame you couldn't use the original song but yeah i loved it all"
Emily Dann: "It was really good I loved it all"
Beth Middlecoat: "Wow"

Sean Roberts: "I cannot believe you made that it looks like an actual opening sequence to a real film.I didn't really know what media studies was but it looks fun if your making stuff like that i really like it"
Stephen Wright: " Looks good I don't really like rom-coms but if this was an actually film i'd go and watch it well done".
Rob Mcdonald: "Wow it looks so good well done."
Joe Pearce:"Pretty Snazzy".
Tom Ball:"Yepp its good :)"
Alex Tanner:"I Thought It Was Very Good"

Audience Feedback Via Youtube

ColeshillMedia
I like the idea of the spilt-screen and you've sustained it really well. The shot of the bus arriving on the male side is really nicely framed. I thought the camera shots towards the end when both characters were walking towards the shops were a bit jerky - and as it was both of them, it was pretty distracting. Good sense of the two characters though. Want to know more...

What Programmes Were Used

Wikipedia:Where we researched other title sequences/genre etc.-
Google:This is where we found the images for some examples.-
Music Programme on Mac :Where we recorded the music for our titles.-
Final Cut Pro:Where we edited together our shots.-
Facebook:Where we arranged shooting days/Got pictures from.-
Blogger:A blog where all our work is displayed.

All of these programmes helped us construct our title sequence with precision.

Our Opening

This is our opening sequence as a group we were really happy with how it turned out but we felt something was missing, due to audience feedback we decided the music still wasn't right, our teacher Leanne Whittaker said the bass guitar in the song was too harsh against the accoustic and it made the piece seem sinister insted of happy. So on 25/02/10 we were back in the editing sweet and used just the guitar riff but this time it was a electric guitar insted of an accoustic and we felt this gave off the right message to the audience.

Research and Planning-Pictures Of Our Piece

These screencaps were taken from our opening sequence, we decided to make the colours of the title gender specific because it worked in context with the codes and conventions of "Rom-coms", this can be seen in films like "Its A Boy Girl Thing".

Research and Planning- The Title Font

When it came to picking the font for the title of our film we were really careful because we didn't want to font to go against the genre of the film, as a group we decided we wanted a font that was quite fun and went with the "teen" element of our film. We went on the website Dafont and we looked at a verity of different fonts. The font we decided to use was called "Mental freak" (the circled font). We think this was the best choice of font for our opening.

Research and Planning- The Song For Our Titles Take 2

When we originally planned our opening sequence we wanted to remix the song She's Got You High By Mumm-Ra however when we remixed it we felt it didn't really go with the edited footage. We then came up with the idea of recording the song with just the guitar riff and perhaps the underlying bass riff and when the recorded guitar was played with the edited footage it fitted really well and everyone within the group felt very excited.

Research and Planning-Font for the titles

For the titles of the film we wanted to something playful and fun to look at. With the help of the website Dafont we saw a font called "Green Pilloww" and immediately we wanted to use this font and we think it works well in context with the genre of the film.

Problems With Editing

One of the main problems we had with editing was the split screen feature. The reason this was our main problem was because we weren't familiar with the editing programme. At the start of the editing process the boxes of the split screen were not the same size.

Research and Planning- Changing The Title's

As we were filming our opening sequence we deicided that our idea for having the titles interlinked with the scene was too difficult to execute because most of our shots were outside. As a group we have now decided to have the titles displayed on each half of the split screen. For example on the half of the screen where "Poppy" is we will have the girl's who will be staring in our film and who were part of making the film and on "Josh's" half of the screen we will have the boy's who will be staring in our film and who were part of making the film.

Editing Our Opening Sequence

The programme we used for editing was Final Cut Pro. The reason we used this programme and not I-movie was because of the spilt screen element to our piece couldn't be achieved through I-movie. At first we experienced issues with getting to grips with how to upload footage and how to cut our shots down so they flowed nicely throughout the piece. Eventually we got to grips with the programme and managed to edit our piece with ease.

Filming Of Our Opening Sequence

These are a selection of On Location images taken on Saturday 24th January 2010. We decided to take shots of us filming just so we had a lasting memory of it.At first we were a bit disappointed with the weather because we really wanted it to be a clear sunny day in order to get the best lighting in each of our shots but in the long run the weather was only a small factor We began filming at 10.30am in Laura's house as a group we all decided to get to Laura's house half hour before just so we could set everything up and not to feel rushed. We decided to film in a methodical order because otherwise it could all go head over heels. When filming in Laura's house we tried our best to stick to the storyboard just so we knew exactly what we were doing, this system worked very well because as a group it helped us see our opening sequence come together shot by shot which for me was a really exciting factor. We began filming in Jack's house at around 1.00 Jacks shots we're considerably easy too shoot because according to the story board there weren't as many shots of Jack getting ready than there were of Laura so this gave us opportunities to re-shoot and experiment with various shot types.
One of the hardest elements of filming was when we were walking whilst filming because we didn't want the shots to become out of focus or too look rushed and when we looked at the filmed footage we didn't feel this came across and we felt we had some steady shots and if the shots were abit bumpy it worked in context with characters walking.

Photos Of The Actors

Here are photos of the actors playing Poppy and Josh the reason we chose these two actors is because we felt they fitted the look of the characters when we were planning them out.

LAURA DEBOURDE AKA POPPY:
The reason we decided we wanted Laura to play our main character because we felt she fitted the character profile fo poppy the best.

JACK LOWE AKA JOSH:
The reason we decided we wanted Jack to play Josh is because we felt he suited the roll the best out of all the boys we know.

Research and Planning-Production Logo

This is the Production Logo for our film. At first we were abit stuck with how we wanted our logo to look because we wanted it simple but we didn't want to make it boring and we also wanted to make it contemporary . We decided on this logo because we thought it would suite the theme of the film well. We also think the simplicity of it makes it exciting.

Research and Planning- Production Name

For Our Production Name We Had A Few Choices To Choose From They Were:
• Cow Chow
• G-Jam
• Love Bug
• Moo
The production Name We Ended Up Choosing Was G-Jam. The reason we decided upon this name was because we wanted all of our names to be combined within it somehow and thats what G-Jam Represents.
G=Gemma
J=Jason
A=Aimee
M=Molly

Reconnaissance

Here are a few photos of Bexelyheath these are the main places we will be shooting in Bexleyheath (the center).

Organising The Shoot.

Who's In charge Of What?
Costumes; As a group we decided Aimee would be in charge of deciding what the actors playing Poppy (Laura Debourde) and Josh(Jack Lowe) will be wearing on the day of the shoot. For the actress playing poppy we decided wanted her to where a floral pattern dress with a cardigan something that is similar to the image below, we feel that this will give an "indie" feel to poppy but also make her look arty and we feel that this type of dress achieves this.

For the actor playing Josh we decided we wanted him in a simple outfit again so he looks "indie"
but we don't want him to look like the typical topman shopper. We decided we wanted Josh in
jeans and perhaps a grey coat and cardigan, something similar to this photo but more suited for outside.

Setting: When we were looking for locations we put Molly in charge of finding the perfect setting for our shoot. As a group we wanted somewhere where the two actors could blend in but subtly stand out. Molly then came back to us and suggested Bexleyheath shopping center and as a group we got really excited the reason for this excitement was because Bexleyheath welcomes a variety of people and sometimes you notice those few people that just happen to stick out and this is exactly what we wanted for our characters.

Organising Actors: When it came to organising the shooting schedule we had to work out times that we were shooting each of the actors because of the fact we were editing it through split screen we had to shoot both actors on the same day at a different time;As a group we decided myself and Jason would be incharge of this and we have decided to organise the actors in two halves (Jason organising Jack and myself organising Laura) and we think this will work out really well. We decided to film the shots of "Poppy" first because that way we could work out how to shoot "Josh's" shots and how to fit them in so they flowed nicely on the screen.

Research and Planning- Analysis of a Rom-Com "A Cinderellas Story"

The way this film opens it really creates a sense of nostalgia because it opens up with a narration of a women reading a story from a children's book and it makes the audience think of their own childhood, the story she is narrating could be the story of her life. The way the name of the film has been written it has an element of old world embedded through it and the audience get an impression of the way the film is going to be laid out or perhaps the way the film will flow.

Before the narration starts the camera takes the audience on a journey through mountains and we then come to a castle this is where the narration begins the camera then zooms out to reveal a young girl sitting on the bonnet of a car looking over a smoggy city and thats when we see where the film is set.

We then move through elemants of the young girls childhood and we see places within her life that will feature throught the movie. We also get to see how close this young girl is with her father and how much she depends on him. During these opening scenes we then see how the young girl gets a step mother and how her father affections change.

However during a night time story reading from her father an earthquake hits her home town and unfortunatly her father dies and the girl is forced to live with her step mother because they couldn't find her fathers will and she is made to work for her stepmother in her fathers diner.

I think this opening is a really good start of a film it sets up enigmas to show what we will be seeing during the course of the film and I think the narration over the top of the opening really helps the audience get an incite of what we can expect to see during the course of the film.

Research and Planning- The Titles

This title sequence is what inspired us for our title sequence. The reason we admired this title sequence was because how the titles interlinked with the opening sequence and thats what we would like to achieve with our titles. Because we are editing our opening sequence through split screen we would like the name of our film to be shown through the split screen instead of in one frame. The way we would like to achive this is by Poppy having a book that says Naive in it and Josh having a DVD with City on it and when they are put together they will say Naive City (the name of our film.)

Research and Planning- Music for our titles

This is the song we as a group would like to have behind our opening sequence.UNFORTUNATELY we can't use the song as it was originally produced due to copy write infringements. So as a group we have decided to Re-mix the song so it isn't how the band originally produced the song.

Research and Planning- Se7en Opening

The opening scene of Seven focuses in on a man (played by Morgan freeman) getting ready for his daily trip to work; The man seems to be taking his time getting ready which could suggest he is not enthusiastic about his job, he is seen putting on a suit which suggests to the audience he is in a job with high importance, diagetic sound is used in this scene to create a naturalistic setting to the scene, this scene is also very simple because in reality this scene is just a man getting ready but when you break it down and pick out all of the details it is quite complex in what it is representing.

As the scene progresses we see the man go into an apartment were a murder investigation of a young woman is taking place indicating that Morgan Freeman is playing the part of a polce oficer; This gives us an incite as too what the basis of this film is going to be about; during this scene we meet two more characters one of which is played by Brad Pitt the way Brad Pitt's character is introduced the audience can immediately see the difference in the two characters; For example Morgan Freeman's character seem cool calm and collected and he is very well set out in regard to what he is wearing his suit is all pristine and nothing is out of place but when you compare him to Brad Pitt's character we get a totally different opinion. From the outset Brad Pitts character seems cocky and aware of his status at his work place, the fact that his outfit is all scruffy e.g. the shirt hanging out and the looseness of his jacket and the chewing of his gum suggest he's not to fussed about this enquiry but he just wants to get it over and done with this could also be interpreted by the way Brad Pitt's character is talking to Morgan Freeman's character because to the audience it seems very degrading and like he's the man in charge and Morgan Freeman just works for him.

As the characters leave the apartment the camera cuts to a shot of them on a city street, even tho the audience doesn't know what city it is exactly the diagetic sound we hear suggests it is a busy city which works very well in setting the overall pace of the film.

We are then brought back to the apartment at the very beginning; We see Morgan Freeman's character lying in bed again this scene is very simple because all he is doing is lying in bed watching television but its what he does after that that makes the scene worth watching, as he turns the television off he turns on a metronome the ticking noise of the metronome is similar to that of a clock which could be perceived as a comfort to him this could foreshadow his characters actions for the rest of the film on the other hand it could be perceived as a thing to drown out the noise of the street outside.

As we move into the opening credits the colour scheme of the credits are black white and red the these colours are often used because they catch peoples eyes and they make more of an impact to the audience. It is during the credits we get introduced to the third main character the "killer" and this is when the theme of the film starts coming together, although we never see the killers face what we do see oh him/her is their hands cutting out things and putting them into a book and it is this that keeps the audience watching because we want to know Whats in that book? Why are we seeing him stick things into the book? What is its relevance? The music within this scene is quite rocky which gives the audience a rush of adrenaline that makes us keep watching the film to see how the "killer" is going to interact with the two police oficers.

Research And Planning-Kyle Cooper

Kyle cooper is a 41 year old title sequence director. He has designed the lead-ins to 150 features - including Donnie Brasco, the 1996 remake of The Island of Dr. Moreau, Mission: Impossible, Spider-Man, Sphere, Spawn, Twister, and Flubber.

"Directors don't call on Cooper for a signature style; they hire him to dig under the celluloid and tap into the symbolism of a film. That aptitude first became apparent in 1995, with the abrasive and highly stylized intro to David Fincher's Se7en. In it, the letters - hand-scratched by Cooper with a needle onto film stock, frame by painstaking frame - disintegrate to the industrial rhythms of a remix of Nine Inch Nails' "Closer." The oft-imitated setup perfectly captured the addled mind of the movie's serial killer and set the tone for the entire film.http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.06/cooper.html"

Research And Planning-Analysis Of A Old Title Sequence "To Kill A Mockingbird"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rP5MutuPVxk

The opening sequence for To Kill A Mockingbird is beautifully made and enchanting to watch. The main focus of the film is innocence and the fact that the main image of the opening sequence is of a child drawing really captures the essence of innocence that the film represents.

The fact that the titles are in black and white really add to the effect of the film. The fact that there is no colour requires the audience to use their imagination especially in regards to the image of the child drawing because it makes us think what are they drawing and what is the significance to this drawing.

The way this title sequence is different from so many modern ones is its simplicity the fact that the titles work so well in context with the film itself if the titles were over complicated it would take away the true meaning of time film.

Research And Planning-What's The Rating For Our Film

For our film we have decided to rate it 12. The reason we have given it this particular rating is because we want as many people as possible to see this film and to relate to this film. Another reason we have given it this rating is because films like "The Proposal" and "Just Married" all have ratings of 12. The reason we have given it a 12 and not a 15 because the reason most films are 15 is because they contain "sex and strong language" and thats not the message we want to give off with our film. The BBFC's Guidelines state that strong language like f*** etc, has to be uncommon at '12' or '12A' - puns on strong language is allowed. Moderate language like 'bitch' and 'twat' are allowed. In our film the lanuguage used will mainly be used in the social groups, for example "Josh don't be a twat". At '12' and '12A' moderate violence is allowed but it cannot be too detailed. They're should be no gory moments.Dangerous behaviour (for example hanging, suicide and self-harming) may be present in ‘12’ or ‘12A’ works but will not dwell on detail which could be copied or present those activities as pain or harm free. Weapons should not be glamorised in ‘12A’ and ‘12’ works. Discriminatory behaviour should not be endorsed by the film as a whole. There may be infrequent sight of drugs misuse in a ‘12’ or a ‘12A’ but the portrayal should not be glamorised or provide instructional details.
